Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Jansunwai: Head Injury Sparks Security Concerns
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on August
20, 2025, during a public grievance hearing (Jansunwai) at her official
residence in Civil Lines, Delhi. The shocking incident has triggered nationwide
outrage, renewed debates about the safety of political leaders, and raised
questions about the security arrangements at open public meetings.
The Incident
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the assailant
approached CM Gupta under the pretext of submitting a grievance. Suddenly, he
slapped her, pulled her hair, and struck her on the head and shoulders. The
Chief Minister fell back and reportedly sustained injuries to her head,
shoulders, and hands. Security personnel quickly overpowered the attacker,
and Gupta was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Delhi BJP leader Parvesh Verma later confirmed that
the injuries were serious enough to require medical attention, describing the
assault as “life-threatening” and “well-planned.” He claimed the attacker came
prepared, raising suspicion of a premeditated plot rather than a spontaneous
outburst.
The Accused and Investigation
The attacker, identified as Rajesh Bhai Sakriya from
Rajkot, Gujarat, was immediately taken into custody. A First Information Report
(FIR) has been filed under serious charges, including attempt to murder.
Police officials have stated that preliminary questioning suggests the accused
harbored grievances, but they are investigating whether he acted alone or was
part of a larger conspiracy.
Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the CM’s
residence and verifying the suspect’s travel history and connections. Security
agencies are also probing how the assailant managed to get so close to the
Chief Minister despite protective measures.
Political Reactions
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from leaders
across the political spectrum. BJP leaders, including Delhi state president
Virendra Sachdeva, demanded stronger protective protocols for the Chief
Minister and termed the attack a “failure of security.”
Opposition parties, including AAP and Congress, also
denounced the violence. Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi expressed
solidarity, stating that “political differences cannot justify physical
attacks.” AAP spokespersons called the assault an attack on democracy itself,
urging the central government to ensure foolproof security for all
constitutional authorities.
Security Concerns
This episode has highlighted vulnerabilities in the Jansunwai
(public grievance) system, where citizens are allowed direct access to the
Chief Minister to air complaints. While the initiative was intended to promote
transparency and accessibility, critics now argue that it exposes leaders to
high risks.
Experts believe that security protocols will need a serious
overhaul, including stricter screening of visitors, use of metal detectors, and
the presence of more trained personnel during such events. Political analysts
warn that the incident could force a rethink of how open and accessible top
leaders should be to the public.
Current Status of CM Rekha Gupta
Hospital sources indicate that Rekha Gupta’s condition is
stable. She has been advised rest after undergoing scans and medical
observation. While doctors have assured there is no immediate danger, they are
closely monitoring her head injuries.
