Pune Tragedy: Wife Donates Liver, Both Die After Surgery – India News
Pune Couple Dies After Liver Transplant Surgery
A very sad incident took place in Pune, Maharashtra, where a woman donated part of her liver to save her husband's life. But sadly, both the husband and the wife died after the surgery.
The couple, Bapu Komkar and Kamini Komkar, underwent liver transplant surgery at Sahyadri Hospital on August 15, 2025. Bapu was very sick and needed a liver transplant. His wife, Kamini, bravely decided to donate part of her liver to him.
What Happened During the Surgery?
Doctors performed the surgery on August 15. Bapu received part of Kamini's liver. This kind of surgery is very complex and risky, especially for people who are already in poor health.
Bapu’s condition was very serious. Doctors had explained all the risks to the family before the surgery. Sadly, Bapu died two days later on August 17 due to cardiogenic shock—this means his heart was not able to pump blood properly after the surgery.
Kamini’s condition was better at first, and doctors thought she would recover. But after a few days, her health started getting worse. She developed an infection, which led to septic shock and multi-organ failure. Despite treatment, Kamini also died on August 21.
Government Takes Action
After hearing about the deaths, the Maharashtra Health Department took this incident very seriously. They sent a formal notice to Sahyadri Hospital. The government has asked the hospital to give a detailed report of everything that happened during and after the surgery.
The hospital has been told to submit this report—including medical records, videos of the surgery, and other details—by 10 a.m. on Monday.
Hospital’s Response
In a statement, the hospital said that they followed all standard medical rules and guidelines. They said both Bapu and Kamini had gone through full counseling before the operation. The risks were explained clearly to them and their family.
Doctors said Bapu was a high-risk patient because of his serious health problems. They added that even though Kamini was healthy at first, complications can sometimes happen in surgeries like this.
What is a Liver Transplant?
A liver transplant is a surgery where a sick person gets a new liver or part of someone else’s liver. The liver can grow back, so sometimes a living person (like a family member) can donate a part of their liver.
This kind of surgery is very helpful but also very risky. Both the patient and the donor face serious dangers, and recovery can take a long time.
In India, there are strict rules for organ donation. Hospitals must make sure both the donor and the patient are fully aware of the risks and give their permission before the surgery.
Why This Story Matters
This tragic event has raised many questions about how such surgeries are done and how hospitals manage high-risk patients. People want to know if the hospital could have done something differently to save the couple.
The government wants to make sure everything was done properly and that there were no mistakes. That’s why they are asking for full details from the hospital.
The loss of both Bapu and Kamini has shocked many people and brought attention to the emotional and medical challenges of organ donation.
